How Barcode Gift Cards Work
Each card carries a unique code. When you sell the card, your POS scans the code and loads the value onto it. When the customer comes back, you scan it again and the POS deducts the purchase and keeps the balance. The plastic card does not store money, it simply identifies the Gift Card account in your system, which means a lost card can be cancelled and the balance moved.
Unique barcodes or QR codes cost $50 per run, not per card. So a run of 1,000 Barcode Gift Cards is $472 for the cards plus $50 for the codes, including GST.
Barcode Formats We Print
- Code 128: the most common format for POS Gift Cards, holds numbers and letters
- Code 39: used by older systems and some library and club software
- EAN-13 and UPC: retail-style numeric barcodes
- QR codes: for app-based Gift and Loyalty Card programs, readable by phones and 2D scanners
- Interleaved 2 of 5 and other numeric formats on request
Not sure which one your system uses? Send us a photo of an existing card, or tell us the POS brand, and we will confirm the format on your free proof.
Black on White, Every Time
Scanners read contrast. That is why we always print barcodes and QR codes in black on a white or very light panel, with clear space (the quiet zone) on both sides. Even if your card is dark or full of colour, the code sits on its own white panel so it scans first time at the counter. Coloured or reversed-out barcodes might look nice, but they cause failed scans and frustrated staff, so we do not print them.
Matching Codes to Your POS
Some POS systems generate their own Gift Card numbers and need the printed codes to match. Others accept any unique number. Either way we can work with it:
- Send us a list (CSV or Excel) of the numbers your POS has issued, and we print one per card
- Give us a starting number and we print a sequential run ($50 per run)
- Ask for random unique numbers so cards are harder to guess
You see the first codes on your proof and can test-scan a sample before the full run prints. Add a printed card number under the barcode so staff can key it in if a scanner is ever unavailable.
Where to Put the Barcode
Most businesses put the barcode on the back of the card, alongside a value panel or signature panel (from $50), so the front stays clean for your branding. Leave a space about 50 x 15mm for a standard barcode, or about 18 x 18mm for a QR code. Our card template on the Artwork Templates page shows the safe area, and our barcode guide explains sizes.
Barcodes on Other Cards
The same barcode setup works on Membership Cards, Plastic Loyalty Cards and 54 x 29mm Plastic Keytags. If your system reads a swipe card instead, see Magnetic Stripe Cards.

Common Questions
Do barcode Gift Cards work with Square?
Square Gift Cards can be sold and redeemed by scanning a barcode or entering the card number. Tell us you use Square when you order and we will lay out the barcode and number in the format your account needs, shown on your free proof.
How much do barcodes add to the price?
Unique barcodes or QR codes are $50 per run, not per card. 1,000 Barcode Gift Cards are $472 plus $50, including GST.
Can the barcode be in our brand colour?
We print barcodes in black on a white panel because that is what scanners read reliably. The rest of the card can be any colour you like.
Can you print numbers our POS gave us?
Yes. Send a CSV or Excel list and we print one number per card in the order you supply.
Can we add a value or signature panel?
Yes. A signature panel is from $50 and lets you write the value or the recipient name on the back.
