When You Need a Magnetic Stripe
If your POS, club software or door reader has a swipe slot, your cards need a magnetic stripe. Many hospitality, club and retail systems in Australia still use swipe cards for Gift Card programs, points, member discounts and cashless spending, because the readers are cheap, fast and reliable.
A magnetic stripe adds from $60 per run, and encoding (writing your data to the stripe) is included at no extra cost.
HiCo and LoCo Stripes
Magnetic stripes come in two strengths:
- HiCo (high coercivity): usually black, much harder to wipe by accident. Best for cards used every day, such as membership, staff and access cards.
- LoCo (low coercivity): usually brown, cheaper to encode and fine for short-life cards such as some gift and promotional cards.
The company that installed your reader or software can tell you which one you need. If you are not sure, send us a current card and we will match it.
Encoding Your Data
A magnetic stripe has up to three tracks. Most Gift, Loyalty and Member Card systems only use Track 2, which holds a number. Send us your card numbers as a CSV or Excel list, or a starting number for a sequential run, and we encode each stripe to match the number printed on the card. We can also print a matching barcode ($50 per run) so the same card works with swipe and scan readers.
Designing Around the Stripe
The stripe runs the full length of the back of the card near the top, so keep text and logos clear of that band. Most people put the card number, a signature panel (from $50) and terms underneath it. The front of the card is all yours for full-colour branding. The 86 x 54mm template on our Artwork Templates page shows the stripe position.

Magnetic Stripe Plastic Cards use our standard plastic card prices, plus the stripe: 2,000 are $790 and 5,000 are $1,744, plus from $60 per run for the stripe with encoding included.
